About this trip
Explore the remote winter wilderness of Northern Mongolia on this 12-day expedition through the Darkhad Depression, snow-covered taiga forests and frozen Lake Khuvsgul.
One of the highlights of this journey is spending two nights with a Tsaatan (Dukha) reindeer-herding family in their winter settlement. Travel deep into the northern taiga, meet the herders and discover how they care for their reindeer and maintain their traditional lifestyle in one of Mongolia's coldest and most remote regions.
The expedition also takes you to the frozen landscapes of Lake Khuvsgul, surrounded by forested mountains and spectacular winter scenery. Along the way, experience an overnight train journey, remote mountain villages, Buddhist monasteries and traditional Mongolian hospitality.
Traveling in 4WD vans with experienced local drivers and guides, this expedition is designed for adventurous travelers, photographers and those interested in the culture and winter landscapes of Mongolia.
Accommodation
This expedition combines comfortable city hotels with basic accommodation in remote areas.
In Ulaanbaatar, Murun and Erdenet, accommodation is provided in hotels. In Ulaan-Uul and Renchinlkhumbe, we stay in simple local guesthouses.
During our visit to the Tsaatan community, we spend two nights with a local reindeer-herding family. Accommodation is basic, with traditional heating and limited facilities. Travellers should be prepared for cold temperatures and simple sleeping arrangements.
At Lake Khuvsgul, we stay in winter camp accommodation.
Winter Conditions
Northern Mongolia experiences extremely cold temperatures between January and March. Temperatures in the Darkhad Depression and northern taiga can fall below -30°C and occasionally approach -40°C.
Warm expedition clothing, insulated winter boots, gloves, thermal layers and a suitable winter sleeping bag are essential.
The journey involves long drives on remote winter roads, and the itinerary may be adjusted depending on snowfall, weather conditions and the location of the reindeer-herding family.
Travel onto frozen lakes or rivers will only be considered when local conditions are assessed as safe.
Important Information
This is a winter expedition to one of Mongolia's most remote regions. Participants should be comfortable with long driving days, basic accommodation and extremely cold weather.
The Tsaatan families move their winter settlements according to seasonal conditions and the needs of their reindeer. The final route and driving distances may therefore vary.
Our priority is to provide a safe, respectful and authentic experience while supporting the local communities we visit.
